We are launching a Buy Local/Boycott Amazon campaign to encourage higher wages for workers and more shoppers for locally owned businesses.

As online shopping on Amazon has soared, locally owned stores and local economies have suffered. Between 2007 and 2017, as Amazon’s business grew 12-fold, more than 65,000 small retailers closed their doors nationally, many of them hardware, apparel and grocery stores. When you support a locally owned business, 68 percent of the money stays in the community, which is far more than shopping at large chains or online.
Amazon’s salaries are well below the ‘living wage’ needed to support an individual or family household in Massachusetts. Seasonal workers are being paid $19 per hour on average in Massachusetts – less than half the $46.76 per hour ‘living wage’ needed to support a family with one child.Amazon and other large corporations’ low salaries are a big reason why so many Americans, including 1.1 million in Massachusetts, qualify for food assistance under the federal SNAP program, which is currently ‘frozen’ due to the government shutdown. Most SNAP recipients are working, but they’re still not making enough money to feed their families. About 67 million people – nearly half of US workers – earn less than $25 an hour.
